BACK TO LAMU AND BEYOND

ddm/COTW as Italian actor in a commercial |
Blogging from Nairobi of
trips to Lamu, Malindi, and Watamu. My nephew Theo is still with me and has
been the best one man crew i could hope for. We make a fast team and have a lot
of fun shooting and traveling. His new nickname Sharif was even eclipsed at a posh Italian dinner party in
Lamu when this lady kept calling him Theodoro. So that stuck pretty much.
Been cranking mainly on
the Sea Turtles of Lamu doco idea and then Friday we re-shot the Africa Chef
cooking show pilot. Had a nice cast and crew and lots of fun rental gear! Felt
like a real shoot! We all had fun and i started cutting it today and i believe
we have a show. More sneak peeks later!
So much adventure since i
landed jan 9th. And more to come. Going back to lewa house safari
lodge tomorrow thru Friday. Then i’m off to Zurich for a week, then Cambodia,
then back to Zurich before returning to Africa mar 17th… St. Patty’s
day! COTW making the rounds!
Elections are coming to
Kenya march 5th, and violence is feared. I will be on another continent.
Glad about that.
We swam the channel in
lamu from shela to manda beach. Took about 40 minutes. I overcame my fear of
depths and finally did it. It felt great. A real achievement of sorts. Making
more friends down there. Glad i have a place there. And look forward to going
back after my plate is cleared…i’ll have 7 videos to cut plus the doco. So i’ll
be immersed in the Stable cutting away for weeks i’m sure. But it’s all good.
it’s all part of the art form. It’s like puzzle solving. And i enjoy it. Takes
a long time to do it right, but it is rewarding. I like making content. Let’s
just hope the Africa Chef gets picked up and we get an order for 12! Then sell
it overseas as well! Marcus just won Best Chef for the 2013 Taste Awards here
in East Africa. That’s huge. He’s vastly entertaining and very knowledgeable.
Fingers crossed!
I’m enjoying Kenya more
this time. Feeing more settled and more relaxed. Trying to enjoy each day, each
moment, and not be so sidetracked worrying about the future. Enough of that.
It’s futile and drainging. Carpe diem indeed.
So i booked that
commercial i auditioned for via skype to Milan. Hilarious. They flew me and
theodoro to malindi for 2 nights and we had one long shoot day with me as
talent. My first commercial as actor in 5 years? 10 years? I honestly cannot
remember. But it was fun to be working. And the Italian cast and crew was
classic.
While in lamu we were
there for Maulid. Muhammad’s birthday celebration. We shot the processional
parade to the big mosque. Quite exciting and chaotic. Stuck in the narrow
streets, the men singing and dancing all around us. i have to find a way to put
the footage in the doco. We were RIGHT there.
I also have become friends
with author and biographer Errol Trzebinski. She wrote Out of Silence which was
Finch Hatton’s biography they also used to write Out of Africa. She’s a classic
old chop with a lovely home in the heart of lamu town. I’d say we have a mutual
admiration society going. She’s incredibly bright and conversation is never
boring. Another friend in lamu.
Now for the pics! Hope you enjoy!
